Finally, after messing it for a day, Windows 7 (along with Aero Preview) now works on my old Alienware Area-51 laptop.
Issue
Graphic Card is Nvidia GeForce FX Go 5700, kinda outdated hence the standard driver does not work well out of the box.
Resolution
Download the modified INF file from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/
After some trial & error, got the 100.65 version for Vista, and voila it finally works.
Edit : My logon screen appears as a different languauge, so here's what i did
Run CMD in administrator mode:
- bcdedit /set {current} locale en-US
- bcdboot %WinDir% /l en-US
- In regedit find and delete where necessary:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MUI\UI\Language
- And lastly,
- In “Region and Language” click on Administrative tab.
- Under “Welcome screen and new user accounts” section, click on Copy settings button.
- Select and tick the check boxes for Welcome screen and system accounts and New user accounts.
- Apply & Reboot
